SICH SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD – honors young women (ages 14 -17) who are engaged in volunteer action within their communities and schools.  Projects previous winners have been involved with have included social problems, drug abuse, discrimination, AIDS or pollution.  The Scholarship is named for the president of the first Soroptimist club which was established in Oakland, California in 1921.  Our 2008 winner was a senior at a local high school who volunteers with the American Cancer Society.  She created a forum at her high school for girls to learn more about female medical issues and the importance of mammograms.  Applications are available in October and due on December 1st

WOMEN’S OPPORTUNITY AWARD – honors women who provide the primary source of income for their families and are seeking to improve their employment status by gaining additional education and skills.  Our latest winner is a woman in her mid-40’s who, after two unsuccessful pregnancies, now has a two-year old.  She is studying to be a court stenographer while raising her child.  Applications are available in October and due on December 15th.

Both of these awards start at the club level.  The winner is then eligible for regional level awards.
